Bristol Hangings

Bristol Hangings

Public hangings were regular at the Old Bristol Gaol. (Cumberland Road, Bristol, UK)The most gruesome was of John Horwood, 3 days after his 18th birthday for the murder of a young girl he loved. He was publicaly hung above this gate to a crowd so huge, they almost fell into the then unfenced New Cut of the River. His body was donated to Bristol Royal Infirmary Surgeon Dr Richard Smith, who had the boys skin removed and preserved. The account of Harwoods crime,Trial & Execution & disection was handed over to a book binder, to be bound in the dead boys own skin!

The last hanging was in 1849, (as the Gaol was repaired following the riots and continued running.) Sarah Harwood was hung for murdering her elderly employer Miss Elizabeth Jeffries. Sarah was beautiful & just 17 years old. Hung at this gate, she begged and pleaded to be spared right up to the point of execution - at which point, unable to cope with the young girls distress any longer, the Governer fainted.
